A painting by Susan Bankey Yoder of Atglen, Pennsylvania, was selected as the winner of the 2004 Pennsylvania Trout/Salmon Stamp Art Competition. The painting, titled "Quiet Time," depicts a fly-fisherman netting a trout on the Brandywine Creek. Yoder said the painting has high sentimental value to her as she and her husband often fished there when they first started dating. She has been a frequent competitor in the annual art contest, often placing among the finalists. In 2002, she placed 3rd. In 2003, her entry initially tied for 1st, but placed 2nd after a "runoff" vote for 1st.

Contest judges with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place paintings This is the 1st time a woman has painted the artwork for the Commission's Trout/Salmon Stamp, which started in 1991.

Second place honors went to Joseph Mattock of Derry, Pennsylvania. Mattock's painting was titled "Little Mahoning - Autumn Hatch." Third place went to Lorraine Bush of Reading, Pennsylvania, for her entry, "Loyalhanna Family Fishing Trip."

The competition for the 2004 stamp was held at the Fish and Boat Commission's Harrisburg Headquarters on May 14, 2003. Artists were given the subject "Fall Trout Fishing," and responded with some spectacular Autumn scenes. Fifty (50) painting were submitted from 45 artists.

Nine judges, including Commission President William Sabatose and Commissioner Leon Reed, evaluated all 50 paintings in the first round of the competition. Eight finalists were selected for a final round, judges then ranked the finalists in order of their preferences. Yoder's painting was clearly the judges pick, as 6 of the 9 chose it number one.
