| Biologists from the Area 4 Fisheries Management Office surveyed
Crooked Creek from Keeneyville downstream to Hammond Lake in July 2007. The purpose of our survey was to
monitor the warmwater fishery in this 8.25 mile long stream reach. Smallmouth bass and common carp were
the principal components of the fishery. They were present throughout the stream segment, but their numbers
and sizes improved the closer we got to Hammond Lake. The best fishery in our study area was from the confluence with
Hills Creek downstream to Hammond Lake. Crooked Creek from Hills Creek downstream to Hammond Lake is located on US
Army Corps of Engineers Property and is open to public fishing.
Some of the other fish present in sufficient numbers and sizes to provide a fishery in Crooked Creek were largemouth bass, white suckers, rock bass, and bluegills. Abundant populations of crayfish and young-of-the-year gizzard shad were the main forage species. The complete list of fish species we found during the survey is in the table below.
