Events and Activities

Welcome to a day at the Linesville State Fish Hatchery! This Open House is our chance to show you how the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission provides fishing and boating opportunities. It’s also your chance to shake off winter’s grip and get a taste of what awaits you this fishing and boating season. This fish hatchery plays an important role in growing and stocking walleye, musky and other fish species statewide. Events, demonstrations and displays are designed to give you some insight into how our agency works. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable day.

Location of Demonstrations and Exhibits

  • Visitor Center -- Upper level of Hatchery Building
  • Hatch House -- Lower level of Hatchery Building
  • Viewing Tank -- Visitor Center
  • Conference Room -- Visitor Center
  • Waterfront -- Behind Hatchery Building
  • Pond -- Behind Hatchery Building
  • Maintenance Building -- Beside raceway with roof

Demonstrations

Demonstrations are scheduled on a rotating basis to allow visitors to see all of the demonstrations during their visit. Times will be posted and announced. Check the schedule near the main doors of the Visitor Center or at the site of the demonstrations.

  • The Walleye Spawning Process -- Watch the staff collect and fertilize eggs (Hatch House)
  • Filleting and Cooking Fish -- Learn how to fillet and cook a fish (Maintenance Building)
  • Electrofishing -- See equipment and hear how fish studies are done on streams and lakes (Pond)
  • How Old is This Fish? -- Determining the age of a fish by reading its scales (Visitor Center)
  • Fly Tying (Visitor Center)
  • Live Reptiles, Amphibians, Invertebrates -- Look. Listen. Touch? (Visitor Center & Pond Area)

Activities for Adults & Kids Alike

  • Fish Prints (Visitor Center) -- Make a paper souvenir of your visit or a $3.00 Fish Print T-shirt
  • Casting (Waterfront) -- Get instruction and practice your fly rod and bait rod casting skills
  • How to rig a rod and reel (Visitor Center) -- Learn how to tie a hook to your line and other basics (hands-on activity)

Exhibits

Inside the Visitor Center, browse through Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission exhibits and activities, and find information about other nearby attractions. Visit displays and information areas provided by other organizations, too. Check out the two-story, 10,000-gallon viewing tank and see some real trophy fish, and a few you may have never seen before.
