MOUNTAIN SPRINGS LAKE
Mountain Springs Lake was a 40-acre impoundment owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and managed by the Fish and Boat Commission.
The lake was drained in 2012 after severe deficiencies were found in the dam, and then breached in 2017 [press release] with no plans to rebuild the dam. It received minimal use, in part because of the difficulty reaching it. Also, agency biologists report that the lake was a poor fishery because of acidic water.
The property is open to the public for recreational use such as hiking. It is accessible only by a five-mile, unpaved road through State Game Land 57. The Commission is managing the property in coordination with some assistance from the
Luzerne County Conservation District for the benefit of aquatic life.
